Barber grabs Athlete of the Week honor

Turner County Rebels football player DeMario Barber was picked by readers of The Tifton Gazette as the newspaper's Athlete of the Week. Barber received 49.01 percent of 4,648 votes cast on The Tifton Gazette Web site, www.tiftongazette.com. He beat out Tift County Blue Devils football player Jay Gaskins and Fitzgerald Purple Hurricane football player Dion Ross for the award. Gaskins received 46.45 percent of the votes while Ross had 4.54 percent. The 4,648 votes were the most cast in the history of the weekly award. Barber, a senior wide receiver and defensive back for the Rebels, caught three touchdown passes to lead Turner to a 46-0 win over Wheeler County in the Region 2-A playoffs last week. Officially, Barber made three catches for 102 yards in the contest. He also intercepted a pass on defense.
