Barber brush drive to help US troops One in an occasional series

LAKEWOOD RANCH - Tom Streck saw a photo of crossed red swords against a blue background at a Lakewood Ranch barber shop and did a double take. He recognized it as the emblem of the U.S. Army's 10th Mountain Division light cavalry at Fort Drum, N.Y., an emblem worn by his father and cousin. When he asked Lynn Rainwater, owner of the Barbary Shoppe, about the emblem, he learned that her son-in-law is serving with the 10th in Iraq. "He says nothing flicks sand out of his firearm better than a boar's hair shaving brush," Rainwater told Streck. "We're sending brushes and a card to all soldiers in the 10th in Iraq for every $5 donation," Rainwater said. Streck immediately threw $10 on the counter. He also wrote notes to go with the brushes to two soldiers he has never met.

Job often dictates hairstyle options

When Kristie VerMulm fixes her hair every morning, she knows she's not the only person who will care how it looks. She's a news anchor for KTIV News Channel 4, and having nice hair is part of the job. Just like the celebrities, she has to make sure her look works for both her public and her private life.So if she wants to change her hairstyle, she can't just go do it. She needs to check with her boss first."You need hair that looks nice on TV, fits for what you do, but at the same time, it has to be real," she said. "I'm a mom with a couple kids, and so I can't have hair that's going to take me nine hours to do because that's not real."She also has to consider how her hair will look from different camera angles."In the 'Live at Five' show, I turn to a monitor to talk to Matt or Ron," she said.

Not as dumb as the hairstyle

If it were still 1997 (and if frosted hair had ever been cool), then Frosted Tipz might be the best name for a band. Having played their first show at a roller rink, Edmonton's Frosted Tipz deserve a bit of leeway, even though the '90s are long gone. "We're not particularly fond of it anymore," laments bassist Allan Hiodebrandt. "It was more of a joke at the time--we take what we do seriously--but we try not to be that serious." Since that fateful night at the roller rink two years ago, Frosted Tipz have made their mark in the Edmonton music scene, releasing their debut EP Heads vs. Hips last summer and planning a full-length for later this year. While the EP presented danceable tunes, fans may be surprised by a full-length saturated with rock and metal influences.

Feel the hair, then style them,

Ludhiana, January 16: Nothing less than a star himself. That's the welcome well-known hair stylist Javed Habib today got from students in Ludhiana, who thronged him for autographs. The hairstylist was in town to attend a seminar where he urged students "feel the hair before cutting them; you will know the kind of cut you must give". Speaking to an enraptured audience, Javed said that hair-cutting is no longer just a 'nai kaa kaam'. It is a science, he stressed. "I am not here to talk about the usual cuts and hair colours. I am talking about a whole stream of science where the hairstylist is the doctor. Make sure you go to the best 'doctor' in town and let him handle your hair. He will see the kind of cut, the colour you need." .
